The Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

In previous Reiki sessions, I encountered many clients who told me that they were feeling dull or a lack of interest in life. If this is the case, the sacral chakra is often closed. The sacral chakra is located below the belly button and above the pubic bone. For a female body, the sacral chakra resides in where the womb would be. The Sanskrit name for the sacral chakra, Svadhisthana, means ‘sweetness’. This is because the purpose of the sacral chakra is for us to experience pleasure, sensuality, movement and creativity. Through opening and balancing the sacral chakra, we will learn how to express our emotions and experience pleasure and sensuality in healthy ways.

Signs of a balanced sacral chakra

If your sacral chakra is open and balanced, it is an indication that you are enjoying the gifts your physical body has to offer. You can be emotional, but you are able to work through your emotions in a way that allows you to flow with life with ease. People with a balanced and open sacral chakra can:

  • Be highly creative
  • Delight in sensual and sexual play
  • Allow themselves to experience a full range of emotions
  • Enjoy fluid movement, for example, dancing

Signs of an overactive sacral chakra

An overactive sacral chakra can often result in forming addictive patterns. This is because the sacral chakra relates to experiencing pleasure and it is quite common for it to become overactive. People with an overactive sacral chakra can sometimes feel their emotions too much. For someone who is a highly sensitive person with an overactive chakra, their feelings of emotions can be tenfold! People with a balanced and open sacral chakra can:

  • Feel that they are controlled by their emotions
  • Form an amount of addictive behavior or an addictive personality
  • Unhealthy attachments to people
  • Be manipulative sometimes
  • Have strong feelings about everything and the feelings are overwhelming

*To bring down the energy of an overactive sacral chakra, try wearing or carry a piece of aquamarine, or working with the heart chakra as well as using physical movements to process strong emotions.

Signs of an underactive sacral chakra

An underactive sacral chakra can make people feel that they do not deserve pleasure and sensuality, and having emotions is wrong. This can be common if people are brought up in a home or societies where discussion of pleasure or sex is not encouraged. People with an underactive sacral chakra can:

  • Tend to be indifferent and apathetic
  • Detach from their own emotions and emotions of others
  • Tend to be unimaginative
  • Find it difficult to express their desires

Common ways to balance the sacral chakra

As the sacral chakra is associated with the element of water, working with water can be one way to open this chakra. Go for a swim, take a bath or shower or simply listen to the sound of water and visualize yourself flowing with water. Another way to balance the sacral chakra is through movements, especially dancing. Dancing can be a powerful tool for activating the energy in the sacral chakra. Turn on the music and move your body! There is no right or wrong way when you dance to the music!

Carnelian is great for enhancing the energy of the sacral chakra. It can help increase creativity, sex drives and emotions. Moonstone is a gentler option compared to carnelian. In addition, sunstone, red garnet and opal are also helpful in bringing an uplifting vibration to the sacral chakra.

Ylang-ylang, sandalwood and cinnamon are great options when you want to balance the sacral chakra through aromatherapy. If a bathtub is not accessible, simply take a few drops of these essential oils into your shower and let the scents lift you up!
